As a child I grew up in Newport, AR. in the 1960.
The airbase was long since decommissioned by that time. But i always wanted to learn about what it must have been like in it operating hay day. What was the history? Who were the men who flew from the airbase. Very little history is available in Newport for research. Most people who lived during that time have since passed way, and the few who do remember are not willing to talk.
But the Newport Airbase played a vital roll in winning the war.
I am great full for this website. To help preserve a vital history. And to the men and women who were there.I would someday like to see a documentary movie made about MARINE BOMBING SQUADRON SIX-THIRTEEN.

There is a picture of my father, Arthur Lemaire, on page 4. He died in 1974, however, if anyone has any memories of him and would be kind enough to share them I would be extremely grateful.

I've read a few comments and questions from Larry Lassise regarding VMF 221. In one posted on a helicopter site he asked about Robert R. Burns...my father. I'm seeking a way to contact Larry.

It has been a pleasure viewing many of the photos. Seeing the crew photos and the young faces was fascinating, especially my Dad, Bill Semple.

Excellent site! I served in the Corps 1961-1965.VMFA-531 (F4B). We were TDY twice to Boca Chica in 63 and 64 before going to the far east. Was stationed at NAS Atsugi, Subic Bay and Danang in the spring of 65. I'd like to think we upheld the tradition of Marine Air that you guys established during WW2. I'll be back to visit often. Site is interesting as I was looking for info on Boris Karloff USO Tour to South Pacific. My father served on Canton Island, Navy, and returned with pictures of Boris Karloff, Jack Carson, and unidentified ladies visiting Canton Island and obviously enroute to KWAJALEIN and other locations possibly. Surprised to find other pictures of them while on tour. Although father is deceased, since 1972, faded pictures remain in family albums.

Fascinating website! I hope to travel to the Marshall Islands soon and am interested in WWII. This website will be a most useful resource for research and comparison.

Thanks!

What a great site. Wonderful Photos and a wealth of info. My father served at MCAF Newport as a CrashCrewman/ MP in 1944. He said he used to make laps around the field with a Sgt that drank alot. Unfortunately he passed away before I came across this info. Semper fi, Marines. Thanks for the memories.

Son of TSgt. Les Bemis. It's good to remember their sacrifices.
